The naive approach and why it fails

The first instinct is to subtract the birth year from the current year: age = current year โˆ’ birth year. If you were born in 1990 and the year is 2026, that gives 36. But it ignores whether your birthday has happened yet this calendar year. If today is February 5 and your birthday is December 15, you are still 35, not 36. The correct whole-year count requires checking whether the birthday month-and-day has passed.

A slightly better formula checks this: subtract 1 from the year difference if the current month-day is before the birth month-day. That works for years. But it still does not give you months and days, and it does not help with total-days or hours calculations. For those you need the full three-step algorithm described below.

The correct algorithm: years, months, then days

The standard way to decompose an age into years, months, and days follows three sequential steps:

  1. Count complete years. Start with the raw year difference. If the current month is earlier than the birth month, subtract 1. If the months are equal but the current day is earlier than the birth day, also subtract 1.
  2. Count remaining complete months. After removing the whole years, look at the remaining month offset. If the current day of month falls before the birth day of month, pull back one month โ€” those days have not accumulated a full month yet. If this subtraction pushes the month count negative, subtract 1 from the year count and add 12 to the month count.
  3. Count remaining days. The leftover days are the current day-of-month minus the birth day-of-month. If that would be negative, add the number of days in the previous calendar month (not a fixed number like 30 โ€” the actual length of the previous month) and reduce the month count by 1. This step is where month lengths matter most.

Why month lengths make this harder than it looks

The Gregorian calendar's months range from 28 to 31 days. This asymmetry creates edge cases that a naive subtraction misses completely. Consider these two scenarios:

  • Born January 31, calculating age on March 1. From January 31 to February 28 (or 29) is not a full month by most legal definitions because February is shorter than January. From February 28 to March 1 is one day. So the age is 1 month and 1 day (in a common year) or 1 month and 1 day (in a leap year where February has 29 days and March 1 is 1 day after Feb 29).
  • Born March 31, calculating age on May 1. April has only 30 days, so April 31 does not exist. The one-month anniversary of March 31 falls on April 30, which means that on May 1, the person is 1 month and 1 day old โ€” not 1 month and 31 days.

Leap years: the February 29 problem

A leap year occurs in every year divisible by 4, except for century years not divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year; 1900 was not; 2024 was; 2100 will not be. February gains a 29th day in leap years and reverts to 28 in others.

This creates two distinct effects on age calculation:

  1. Total day count varies. A 30-year lifespan beginning in 1996 contains a different number of leap years than one beginning in 1990, so the total days lived differ even for the same calendar-age. Over 30 years, the average is about 7 or 8 leap days added.
  2. February 29 birthdays. People born on February 29 have no exact anniversary date in non-leap years. Different countries treat this differently: in most of the English-speaking world, the legal birthday in a common year is February 28 (you turn the age at the end of February 28). Age expressed in total weeks, days, and hours

Beyond years, months, and days, there are several other units in which people express their age, each useful in a different context:

  • Total days. The exact count of calendar days from your birth date to today. This is often used in medical contexts (newborn age is almost always tracked in days for the first weeks of life), in legal age checks where a specific number of days matters, and just as a striking personal fact. A 20-year-old has lived approximately 7,305 days; a 35-year-old, roughly 12,784.
  • Total weeks. Divide total days by 7. A 10-year-old has lived about 521 complete weeks. Weeks are commonly used in pregnancy tracking (gestational age is stated in weeks and days) and in infant development milestones.
  • Total months. Multiply complete years by 12 and add the remaining months. This is useful for financial contexts where interest compounds monthly or when comparing ages in health screening charts.

Chronological age vs. other age systems

The system described so far โ€” counting complete years from the exact birth date โ€” is called chronological age and is the international standard. But it is not the only system in use.

East Asian age reckoning

In the traditional East Asian system, historically common across Korea, China, Japan, and Vietnam, a person is considered 1 year old at birth (counting the time in the womb as the first year of life), and everyone gains a year on January 1 โ€” not on their personal birthday. This means a baby born on December 31 is already 2 years old by traditional counting just two days after birth.

South Korea officially abolished the traditional system in June 2023 and mandated international (chronological) age for all legal and administrative purposes. Age in Japanese traditional counting (kazoedoshi)

Japan historically used kazoedoshi, a system essentially identical to the traditional Korean one: age 1 at birth, increment on New Year's Day. It was officially replaced for civic use by the Meiji government's adoption of Western age reckoning, but the term still appears in ceremonial contexts.

Bone age and developmental age

In medicine, "age" sometimes refers to developmental measures rather than the calendar. Bone age is assessed from X-ray images of skeletal development and can differ from chronological age in children with growth disorders. The one special case is February 29 birthdays in a non-leap year: the next birthday defaults to February 28 of the following year or, if that year is also not a leap year, the next February 28 that is followed by a leap year's February 29.   • Always specify a reference date. "How old am I" has no single answer without knowing the reference date. When filling legal forms, match the reference date on the form precisely.
  • Use the actual calendar, not 30-day approximations. Multiplying months by 30 introduces errors of up to 4โ€“5 days per year โ€” enough to matter in medical or legal contexts.
  • Confirm the year-type for February boundaries. If a calculation crosses February, check whether it is a leap year. The difference of one day can matter when you are right on a threshold.
  • Account for time zones if precision is critical. For most purposes this does not matter, but "born 11:30 pm on December 31 in New York" is technically already January 1 in many other time zones. This is rarely relevant in practice but can arise in international legal proceedings.
