How the price-per-unit calculation works

The formula is simple: divide the total price by the total quantity expressed in a common base unit. The challenge is that products come labelled in all sorts of units — ounces, grams, kilograms, pounds, litres, millilitres, fluid ounces — and mixing them makes comparison impossible without first normalizing to the same unit.

The calculator picks a base unit for each category (grams for weight, millilitres for volume, meters for length) and converts every input to that base before dividing. Here is a worked example comparing products labelled in completely different units:
